Public speaker Bernie De Souza Shows Schools Way Forward

Professional speaker Bernie De Souza has learned a great deal from his own business mentor Dr Robert Rohm who devised the Personality Insights profiling process which has made him famous around the world.

Long ago the former American teacher who often shares centre stage with him proved to him that the profiling process he uses has merit in the schoolroom.

That's why Bernie De Souza works with schools showing them his profiling process and also tells children his rags to riches story where he fought council house steriotyping and worked his way to the top.

Bernie has also devised a new presentation and training package especially for teachers to show them the different approaches needed for different personality types outlined in the D.I.S.C. Profiling process he has mastered and evolved.

He explains: “A "D" type child's approach to learning is: I want to do things my own way! "D"s want to know what the material is about before they decide if it's worthy of their time and trouble. They are "big picture" people and want you to be quick and to the point. They want to be in charge, and they often do well in helping to teach the class.”

It is not surprising that these dominant personality types can appear bullying as they are often the leaders of the pack who are not always a force for good.

“Fortunately they can be shown the way and taught to recognise the needs of others,” Bernie says.

“An "I" child's approach to learning is: I want to do things the fun way! "I"s learn best in a relaxed atmosphere because pressure throws them into panic. They love to learn by playing games and enjoy being creative. They tend to be very tactile. If they can see it or manipulate it, they can understand it,” he explains.

Teachers are shown the D.I.S.C. Process at events first of all through self profiling and then finding out about the other characteristics that make us different.

“I show how an "S" child's approach to learning is: I want to do things the easy way! "S"s do not like a fast pace or change; they want their teacher to slow down so they can process what is happening. They tend toward self-doubt, so they appreciate a teacher going over the information again. They want to please others and feel education is a cooperative process.”

Similarly a "C" child's approach to learning is: I want to do things the right way! "C"s expect their questions to be answered with quality information. they love facts and figures. They tend to be perfectionists. Explain expectations beforehand, so they can measure their progress. This environment is in harmony with their basic style. Most enjoy doing extra credit work.”

Bernie's presentations at schools are fun and interactive and demonstrate the power to be had in knowing the personalities around us.

Bernie De Souza works with top sportsmen and women on conflict resolution and career management and communication programmes to improve team balance and goal setting.

He is credited with helping Pakistan and West Indies cricket teams in the past and last year worked with top footballers as well as cricketers, which he is carrying forward into 2010.

Bernie is keen to show as many educators as possible the way forward when it comes to teaching at school and creating harmony in the home.
